On Tuesday I decided to tackle the job of cleaning my carpets myself. I rented the machine, stuffed it into my tiny Prius, and so the adventure began. Of course I had to move around a lot of furniture to get to the carpets, which caused quite a few eye-opening experiences. One was a pair of striped socks my daughter had left when she visited 4 months ago. Apparently, housekeeping has not been number one on the list.
Trust me when I say my coaching skills are far more honed than my housekeeping skills… As I made the discoveries and released the carpet from the hold of grime inside, I was reminded of how many people are holding on to belief systems that no longer serve them. Deep within the fibers of the carpet the grime had taken its toll. Far below the surface the slow deterioration of the carpet fibers was taking place. At the surface level all seemed well. The same happens inside the human psyche. On the surface we go through life and work and all seems fine. From the surface our lives appear normal. But in reality, we have allowed wrong belief systems to slowly take hold and somewhere along the way, as we have bought into those false beliefs, our brilliance our ability to achieve incredible success became diminished. Our thoughts about wealth, success, and money are all imbedded in us by our family, our culture, and our experiences. These belief systems become our operating system. Now if you just want an average life with average results you very likely won't have any issues. But as you try to achieve success, as you strive to do more and be fore and have more, these –invisible to you—belief systems hold you back. How do you even know you are operating under a false belief system? The only way to know is by your results. What are your results today? Are you achieving mediocrity when you really want something more? How's your business? How's your team? Does it seem like you just can’t get ahead no matter how hard you try? Then it is very likely you, and very likely your team as well, are operating under a faulty belief system. Shedding a faulty belief system takes a willingness to invest in your own growth. It takes effort, it takes time, and it takes making the right choices at the right time. For some, like me, it takes a coach to help reveal those underlying drivers. The results, however, are amazing. I’ve personally seen failing businesses become thriving enterprises just from an investment in the leader and the team.
